Ancient Persia: Sassanian Coins and Artifacts for Sale
The Sassanid Dynasty is usually referred to as the Sassanian Empire (also spelled Sasanian Empire in ancient sources). The period was one of great history and influence which began after the defeat of the Parthian kingdom by Ardashir I in 206 AD, and flourished until 651 AD when the last Sassanian king Yazdegerd was defeated by the Muslim Arab Caliphs. The Sassanian Empire encompassed modern-day Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Armenia, as well as portions of Syria and Turkey. To the Sassanian people, they were called "Eranshar"-- the "Iranian Empire."
In the 7th century AD, Sasanian king Khusro II, during the war between the Persian and Byzantine empires, sacked Jerusalem and took the True Cross as spoils of war. He triumphantlyly brought this holy relic back to Persia, where it was re-captured by the Byzantine emperor Heraclius and taken to Constantinople, then back to Jerusalem.
