The First Jewish Coin! Hasmonean Kings of Judaea. John Hyrcanus (Yehohanan), 135 - 104 BCE.
Directly related to the story of the Maccabees, and the story of Chanukah.

Small bronze prutah. Hebrew inscription: Yehohanan the High Priest and the Council of the Jews" in five lines within wreath. /
Double-cornucopia adorned with ribbons and pomegranate within the two horns; small "L". ref: Hendin-454 for type.
All found near Jerusalem, ex-Jerusalem, Israel private collection unless indicated otherwise.

The Hasmonean Dynasty began following the Revolt of the Maccabees, led by Matthias the Hasmonean. This revolt successfully overthrew the forceful oppression of the Seleukid Kingdom and its leader Antiochos IV Epiphanes after leadership had been passed to Matthias' son Judah The Maccabee. Antiochus VII was defeated, which was followed with the liberation of Jerusalem and the Temple in 164 BCE. The Temple was then re-dedicated for eight days, during a grand festival that is still celebrated millennia later, the Jewish tradition of Chanukah. As my friend and scholar David Hendin wrote, "Freedom of worship was once again guaranteed, and Jerusalem was recognized as the religious capital of the Jewish nation." Bearing a Paleo-Hebrew script, the coins struck during the Hasmonean period were the very first Jewish Dynastic coinage ever struck, are among the most important in Jewish history.
