Medieval Europe, c. 12th - 15th Century AD. Pilgrim holy water flask made of lead. Also known as a pilgrim ampulla, these lead vessels were brought from pilgrimage places as a souvenir. Some scholars have suggested that many ampullae were used in the annual springtime 'Blessing the Fields' ceremony, in which the Holy Water they contained was sprinkled on the ground to give prayer for a good harvest. Others have suggested that the ampullae were buried along with their contents for a similar purpose. 2 1/8" (5.4 cm). Basically intact with a scalloped lower section, and quite nice as these come. #A11017x2: $175
