Judas' 30 Pieces of Silver:
The Famous Biblical "Shekel of Tyre"
Back to: All Holy Land & Biblical Coins for Sale
The silver shekel minted in Tyre, Phoenicia was the purest and most desirable coin in the ancient world.
The Jewish Temple in Jerusalem only accepted these coins as tribute because of their extreme purity.
For this reason, when Judas betrayed Jesus, he demanded to be paid only in this type of coin. Of course it is impossible to tell if any of these specimens were among those original 30 coins, but every example shown below was indeed circulating there during the time.

LIFETIME OF JESUS!
Shekel of Tyre, Famous Biblical "30 Pieces of Silver" of Judas.
Phoenicia, Tyre. Silver Shekel. Struck in the teens or twenties AD. Because the inscriptions were so difficult to decipher I consulted my dear friend David Hendin himself, author of the definitive books on the subject: "I guess this could pass as PM, PN, or even P-lambda. However it is of the extremely crude style where the date is simply not clear. Take a look at the KP and monograms on the right and you will see that even the letter K is a stylized thing. Brooks Levy of Princeton researched that this style was manufactured in the teens or 20s AD." ref: RPC I 4657-variation for type. 24mm, 13.99 grams. Ex J. Keller collection, Lantzville, BC Canada.
