Ancient Rome, Central Italian, c. 175 - 225 AD. Attractive Roman terracotta oil lamp with a fish and maker's mark. The lamp is mold made with circular body and short rounded nozzle, heart-shaped on its upper surface, a ring handle at the rear. The angled shoulder is separated from the discus by a substantial single molding, a central filling hole with air vent below. On the discus, a nicely detailed fish. On base, maker's mark LVCCEI within a raised disk, a sunken ovule above and below. L: 4 3/8" (11.1 cm). Handle with some repair, earthen encrustation. #861211: $350

Ancient Roman, 1st century AD. Attractive red-orange terracotta discus lamp with a rabbit! Shown within concave disk, set off by quadruple rim, ovolo around. The rabbit appears to hide beneath a branch. The nozzle is short and rounded, the base flat and set off by a raised ring. Intact, earthen deposits. 2 7/8" (7.4 cm). Fine Roman discus lamp with Eros, 1st - 2nd Century AD. Mould-made, reddish buff, with slightly concave discus featuring Eros (Cupid) with wings open, drawing bow and arrow. Filling hole off center, with small air vent in nozzle channel. Nozzle wide, with splayed top. Impressed flat base. 2 7/8" (7.4 cm) long.
