This is a very interesting piece—a two-level oil lamp made in the tradition of the Chinese Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD). It has an off-white, cream colour glaze over most of its body and has a beautiful painte flower and Chinese symbol of red, purple, blue, green and brown on the front of the lower level. The handle at the rear makes it able to carefully carry while lit. There is "tomb dirt" still clinging to much of the piece. It has not been cleaned because it has the appearance of having recently been excavated after 1,000 years in the earth. It is in great condition, and has many small cracks throughout the surface that do not detract from its stability, but rather add to its charm and perceived age. Although we are unsure about its age, we find it unlikely to be a true artifact of the Song Dynasty and more probably a reproduction made within the last 200 years. It measures 4-3/4" tall and 4-1/2" wide.
